WORK BENCH/ STORAGE

Well I haven't gotten very far over the last couple of weeks . I' ve been gone for a few days and then I started back to work last Tuesday. It always takes me a few days to get my times down after I go back to work . I think that's all part of being old .

when I last posted I told you I had made legs out of pressure treated 4x4 but forgot to post a pic so here it is.............

the rest of the pics just show my slow progress of this reconstruction of this cabinet. I still need to put drawers in the very bottom of the cabinet but that will not be until next week.................................Thanks for taking a look and please leave a comment if you wish you could also follow me .....Thanks again

1967 CABINET SAVE

I bought 2 of these cabinets at a church yard sale approx. 5 years ago . I think I paid about $5.00 each but I could be lying I really don't remember. Any way I set them along the wall and put doors on them to cover what ever I had hidden in them . As you can see they just became crap catchers. They had so much stuff on them you couldn't see the top.

I've been needing a work bench/ storage for a long time so I have decided use these . I have removed the face frame and the pedestal and put on 4 ,11 " legs I like my work benches to be tall because I can't bend over very well anymore .

I plan to install a wood working vice and several drawers . I think in my own case drawers will not become so trashy and will have a much cleaner look over time. I'm going to try to keep the top clean and not let it get buried like it was in the past. also there will be about a 4' opening in the middle for my jointer to sit I'm going to try to make a pullout sled to use it and then slide it back in when I'm done

An interesting note you remember I told you I bought these at a yard sale at a church . When I pulled the face frame off there was a sticker on one of the boards that was dated 1967. I thought that was kinda interesting..........Thanks for Looking

That Time of Year Again

Well it's that time of year again when I have to start getting ready to go back to school bus driving. This summer seemed to just fly by this year and I got nothing of major importance done . Well as they say that's the way it goes! I've had a few projects I've been working on slowly I will put on a few pieces and then take them off again because I don't like them. I try to build all my stuff so it can be completely assembled as a dry fit ,before I apply any glue or mechanical fasteners, it makes the whole process difficult because the fit has to be right on. Some times I run out of materials because of mistakes and I have to purchase more material before I can proceed with the project..... Some times I just get tired of a project and I will put away for a while then I usually have to start over because I don't think it looks good anymore.

I always tell myself this time I'm going to slow down and document my procedure but I never do just the way I am I guess .I am working on a game for the family fall festival my wife puts on at the Church each year. Its just a bunch of games for the kids to play and they win tickets to purchase prizes It's a lot of fun and its all free. This year I am trying to build a chicken coop and have a wheel in the bottom to disperse one plastic egg at a time . If anyone has any good ideas let me know all Input would be much appreaciated               Thanks for all of you're responces

Getting Old

I find it hard to believe that its August already. I haven't got a good start on everything I wanted to get done this summer. I think my biggest problem is my age  I' m a lot slower than I use to be but I keep telling myself I'm not . I seem to have more trouble with anything that requires being on my knees I'm only good for about 5 minutes then I have to stand up and move around. My eyes don't want to work as well either I have to take my glasses off if I want to look at anything up close and then I have to spend 30 minutes looking for them. I cant tell you how many times in a day I'll measure something 2 or 3 times and still cut it wrong . Oh well that's the price we pay for life sad part about it is I feel this old and sore and I'm not old enough for retirement yet. I won't go into what other parts of my body that have either shut down or just plain don't work anymore that's a whole new blog. Thanks for looking

dog casket

Well I got absolutely no response to my request about pet caskets so I ventured out on my own   I had some old pine that I had practiced routing on so I plained it down to half inch thickness . I just started cutting parts and fitting them together and this is what I came up with.
The top is made from 3/4 thick and both the top and bottom I plan to line with fabric
The casket its self measures a foot wide two feet long and 8 inches deep  .
I haven't as yet decided how I am going to attach the lid nor how I am going to finish the out side I've been thinking of just painting it white but my wife thinks it should be stained . I also plan to put a handle on either side just so it will be recognized as a casket.  Tell me what you think......Thanks for looking

doggy casket???????

I have a family member who has a small dog that has become part of her family. all of her children have grown and left home to pursue what adventures they may. The is a great little dog it has a ton of personality and is cute. I'm not exactly sure what its medical problems are but the vet says she is going to die from it. I have been ask to build a casket for this dog and I really haven't got a clue as to where to start. Personally I think a casket is a bit much for a dog but my wife assures me that it quite a thriving business. I would greatly appreciate any input that anyone could give me maybe a picture or two would be nice. .Thanks for looking

Rambelings

I really have no project to show even though I'm working on about 5 of them at one time I'll get them posted as soon as I can. I feel more like just talking and what better way to not be interrupted that put it all down here. I have less than 10 working days left for the school district I've worked for ,for the past 5 years . They have decided to contract us out even though it won't save them any money. I can't understand the way things work now a days every one is going around fixing things that are'nt broken. The school board actually added approx $160,000.00 to our budget so the contractor"s bid would come in lower. Any way they will be taking over Oct 17. I don't know how many days I will have  left from that day on.
On to other things My grand son is now walking he is 13 months old. He thinks his Grandpa is a pretty special guy I hope he never finds out the truth. My Grand daughter is now in the 1st grade and seems to be doing better than last year. I think she did a lot of growing up over the summer. I really don't think she thinks I'm very special but she sure loves her Grandma....
I had a big pile of pallets given to me the other day right now I'm trying to get them all apart maybe I'll build a special pallet project for this blog. I ask several times for some one to let know if they are out there as of now absolutley 0 responces...............all you have to is punch in heyor get the hell off I just want to know I'm not alone.
So how does everyone like being shut down well ok having the government shut down?

Raised Strawberry planting bed

I never go to Home Depot with out checking they're cull been , for those of that don't know thats where they put all the cutoffs and damaged wood. The prices go for anywhere between $.51 to $4.00 depending on the color of paint they put on it. I managed to get there just as they put some new wood in the bin it was all 2x6 both pressure treated and plain lumber most of it was atleast 4 ft. long .I bought it all for .51 cents each cost me all of $15.oo . the following is what I made from that lumber.

Its a raised strawberry planter since my wife and I both have problems bending over for long periods of time We thought it would be nice to be able to stand up and pick strawberrys .  It measures 8ft. long and 2ft wide and is approx 39" tall with the planter box about 9" deep . I think it will work out really good for us eventho weve missed the strawberry season this year. I can hardly wait for next spring I love fresh strawberrys...........Thanks for looking Rick

Diaper Changing Table

Our church just recently remodled they're restrooms they were in dire need of it. After all the work was done in the ladys room some one said that we had no Changing station in either restroom ,by then all the funds had been used up.So I built one out of lumber instead of one of the fancy plastic one you see in Mc Donalds and such places. The table serves two purposes it gives a place to change dispers and it also cover some pipe the were sticking out of the wall that was for a sink that was removed.

It has since been painted and installed and looks like it has always been there .I built the table from scrap wood I scraped up and it cost me only $5.00 for the hardware. Thanks for looking

Adirondack Love Seat

As you can see I finally got the love seat done . I think its a real good match for the chair I also built a little table to go along with the set . I'm working on a matching foot stool one that could be used on any of the chairs or the love seat. I have sold a  few of the chairs but I am a little disappointed that I'm not selling more. but the sun has finally come out maybe now they will sell. Thanks for looking

Only time will tell if I can make any money . Right now I have them priced for $60.00 Each I don't know if any will sell at that price but if I sell them any Cheaper then I'm working for nothing.

My Father 1923 - 2012

Last week I laid my Father to rest. He was 89 years old and had a very good life I suppose you could say. He was self employed the last 50 years of his life he owned an auto salvage /tow truck business  up untill he semi retired in the late 70's but then he did scrapping and used car sales untill he started to lose his sight in the early 2000's . Than we all watched as he slowly shrunk into a tiny little representation of his former self. It wasn't an easy show to watch  . My Mother and his wife of 68 years tried her best to care for him but she has a weak heart and just could not do everthing she needed to do so 'about a year ago we put him in assited living. And as many of you may have witnessed once a person goes into assited living it usually speeds up the dieing process . My father and I had a stormy first 30 years together I personally think he hated me and I dredded to see him coming. Altho we had some good times during that period I can't put a finger on any one thing. I was in a nutshell everything He did not want in a Son . I played music in a rock band starting the summer between the 6th. grade and my middle school debut .That was about 1965 he hated the thought of having a long haired hippy in his family and went out of his way to make sure I knew it. Me of course being of the same blood responded the way you would expect .It was not pretty to watch. I really thought things would get better when I married and left home but I was wrong . I did not know it then but it was the fact we where both in the same town . That marrage only lasted 6 years but I did give him a Grand Daughter. In 1980 I married my wife and the one person in the world I would die for After 4 years marrage we gave him onother Grand Daughter .None of this seemed to Improve our relationship. In 1986 I was offered a job in Las Vegas Nv. so I took it he wouldn't even say good by the day I left .I really didn't care to be honest I hated the thought of moving down to such a big city I had never known any thing else and was scared to death. To be quite honest if it had not been for my Wife I probly would not have stayed. But instead we spent 18 years there and still miss it today. Some time during our time in Vegas my Father decided He liked me I really didn't do anything to change things We started spending time on the phone and they (Dad & Mom) Would come for visits as often as they could and we would like wise try to make a trip up north atleast once a year.By I think 2005 we started our plans to move to Roseburg Oregon By then his health had already started to fail and he only got to come and visit us here twice and both times he was kinda like a lost puppy. He really did'nt function well out side his own home. I understand I don't either.Dispite everthing that transpired between him and I over the years I loved him very much and will miss him. Words cann't express how I feel as I write this it's hard to cover 89 years in a few lines and I know his life would probly fill a book But at this time all I can say GOODBY DAD ....     Jim L Goff  1923-2012
