WALL HUNG MIRROR

I'm sorry for not posting anything sooner but I've been so busy with my Christmas prep that I just didn't have time . I spent the bigger part of last week end putting up out door lights in the rain I've been fortunate the last few years the weather has been clear but not this year. The rain only slows me down but it won't stop me. I am working on one wood project it's a wall hung mirror that will be approx. 5' 6" tall and 2'6" wide to hang in our bedroom . I designed the frame to mimic a mirror thats on top of an old antique chest of drawers that we have . I will post pictures later today of the mirror and my progress of the frame.  The frame is built out of solid cherry and segmented for strength. As a side note our holiday craft show was a huge success We have already started planning next years event........Thanks for reading

election

I 've heard for years the true sign of insanity is to do the same thing over and over expecting differant results. I think the state of Oregon is collectivly insane. Oregon is in the top five of the nation in unemployment Some where in the top ten as far as taxes being leveid on it's citizens And a state government that is asleep at the wheel. So this past tues what do we the proud people of Oregon do we recycled all our demecrats and added a few new ones . With an unemployment rate of almost 15 % I would say the dems policies arent working. Just my opinion but we as a state sure are stupid. I hope everyone who lives here with me enjoys the next few years I think you 're going to see a lot of changes and not many for the good..................................Rick

The weather and Christmas

The weather here has cooled off considerably in just the last few days and it's raining . Normally I hate the rain but if I don't have to work in it it's not so bad. I can leave the door to my wood shop open and watch it rain and it calms me . I don't however have anything good to say about the cold I don't understand why it can't be 70 degrees year round . I do have to admitt that I get more done when it's colder but not extreme cold . This is the time of year my thoughts turn to Christmas projects that I can do in a hurry . I have to give a shout out to Steve from Wood Working For Mere Mortals {if you have not been to his sight you need to check him out} He has lots of items on video that you can do to make gifts or stuff for yourself. I don't know where Steve gets his ideas but His sight is one I go to every day.

I get the feeling from time to time that I'm the only one who ever checks this blog . I realise as of late I have not been keeping up steady blogs like I should . Things have been a little hectic around my house the last couple of months and my mind and fingers have been otherwise occupied. I promice to do better in the future, What I would like you all to do out there is to let me know you where on my sight you don't have to tell me anything about yourself just leave a comment even it's to tell me to get off the net.I have been working on some new projects but they are not ready to post as of yet. If any of you have any questions about wood working or life in general maybe I can help..Drop me a line and i'll get back to you A.S.A.P...........................Dr. Rock

free standing mirror

I found this miiror in the trunk of a car about 30 years ago. I just put it in a box and forgot about it untill about a month ago. the mirror frame is straight grain qtr sawn fir and the base is mahogany. I did not take pictures of the construction of this I know I should have. The frame is a edge glued 1x10 fir board and is basically one peice construction rabbited out on the back side to allow for the mirror .The back is a peice of red wood edge glued and screwed to the back for easy access to the mirror. The base is mahogany .I still need to put a finish on this would welcome all suggestion as to what to use. Thanks for looking.

Vote

I'm telling you we all need to get together and vote this Nov. If we let things continue as they are we will all end up with nothing or ay least a hell of a lot less than we had when it all started. I don't profess to know every thing but I know when things are changing and not for the better . You don't need to vote straight Rep. but we do need to find some one that thinks on the conservative side and vote for them. Don't be sucked in by a smooth talker that has no intention doing what he says during his or her campaign . You all know how they are You also have too know things are'nt right I don't care how liberal you might be.........VOTE VOTE VOTE

We're going to build a house

Its been a little while since my last post so let me bring you up to date . I have not been working much as far as wood working projects. I've done a couple of small jobs but nothing worth mentioning . I did how ever pick up a much larger band saw last weekend at a yard sale. Its an old Craftsman 12" , its in really good shape. I got it for less than $50. The people had replaced the rubber tires on the blade wheels and they had put them on inside out so I switched them around and was up and cutting in no time. Now  I'll be able to resaw up to 8" wide boards that way I wont be wasting so much wood planning it down to thickness.   A car pulls up infront of the local lumber yard there are 2 men inside of the car. One of the men gets out and goes into the lumber yard and finds an attendant and tells him " I need a 4x2.  The attendant say's are you sure it's not a 2x4. The man says I don't know let me go ask my brother,so he goes out to the car and talks to the other man and soon returns and says "youre right it is a 2x4" . So the attendant ask him " OK how long do you need it?" The man once again ran out to the car and talked to the other man upon returning he told the attendant " Well we're going to need it quite a while we're going to build a house.......................

quiting

You ever have one of those days when you question all you're skills and knowledge. Thats what my day was like I spent the entire day building a frame around an old mirror That I've had for years . I can honestly say I worked pretty steady and at the end of the day I have 3 differant designs none of which work. I'm not happy and am very discouraged .It wouldn't take much for me to just quit right now, but I didn't get this far in life by being a quitter so tomorrow is another day. Thanks for reading just needed to get that off my chest........................

My wife brought this hame from a yard sale and ask if there was any thing i could do for it.
The first thing I did was to take it apart and sand to bare wood where possible. I dicovered that it was an old pedistal bed that had been converted. The seat was only about 14" off the floor so I took the top 4" off of the posts and attached then tp the bottoms.
I
I then made the front post only half the height of the rear ones and then I attached round ball to the tops of each post.I then reassembled it and painted it black I removed the padded seat and put in 1x6 peices of pine stain with cherry stain. I like the way the finished product turned out Thanks for looking

WOODEN BOX

S Saturday morning my daughter came to me and said she needed a box. It needed to be 18"x14"x9" tall. This is what I came up with. The splayed sides were my idea as well as the finger joints I wanted them more for strength than beauty but it works well either you way go. Nothing extraordinary about the box . One side story all the materials are cedar from the deck posted on this site a few weeks ago.

She plans to paint some decorations on the sides then stain it and the put a couple of coats of varethane .I'll post those pics when avail.

Graffiti Weekend

For those of you that know me you know I have an old 1929 Ford Model A. For those of you that don't know me I have a 1929 Ford model A . This past weekend was Roseburgs annual Graffiti. It is 1 of the largest rolling car shows in the state of Oregon if not the biggest. In upwards of 400 cars or more. This just a small sampling of the cars that were there . You will note to you're left
in the pink poodle skirt is my 3 year old grand daughter . We try to participate in as much of the activities as possible but our only problem I don't like to drive my car after dark. You have to strike a match to see if the head kights are working. We had alot of fun even though it was unbearably hot this year . For anyone who enjoys hotrods and classic cars and even antiques. This is the place you should plan on taking in some day. Rick

crown molding

I've watched videos where they made crown molding on the table saw . This was my first attempt at it . It turn out pretty good I think , this is just a small portion that I used in my wife's office/craftroom I also built all the cabinets in that room but I didn't take any pics of those yet. I would suggest to anyone who wants crown molding to try to make you're own before you spend the money buying premade. If you would like any further info on how to do this . leave me you're e-mail and I'll send you detailed instructions.............Rick

clean shop

I have just finished 2 & 1/2 days of constant cleaning in my shop and you can't tell anything has been done. I need to figure something else out because this aint working.I don't have a dust collection system and I think that is a big portion of my problem.Another of my problems is staying on task I'll be working along and realise that I'm doing something not even related to what I started. I'll clean a spot and then move every thing from another spot into it so I can clean that spot . It's a vicious circle I tell ya,when will it end. It used to be kinda funny I called it moving saw dust but now I just can't take it anymore. If anyone has a clue about how to stay focussed tell me please all comments are welcomed.....

I found this mirror at a yard sale it cost me$2.00 its oval and beveled all around the edge I really don't know what kind of wood that I made the frame from at the time I thought it was walnut now I'm not sure, could be cherry?

chest

I built this chest approx 15 years ago all I had was a skil saw and a sander and that was about it
It lives quietly in my bedroom and holds things we don't use often. It's built entirely from recycled pine boards which were crates for industrial radiators. If you look close you can see nail holes in spots.

The corners are all box joints and the handles swing up and lock so you can lift it. There is also an applied molding around the bottom for a foot. I'm thinking maybe I ought try building one now that I have the proper tools to do it,could be interesting.......

christmas crafts

Every year my wife has a holiday show at our house We have to give up a least 2 rooms to hold every thing. I cut these out with a scroll saw and she paints them. She is the one with all the talent.
She also makes other things like theamed baskets which are good for employers to buy for they're crew.I don't have any pics of those when she makes some I'll post pics then.

The holiday gift show is normally the weekend after Thansgiving and runs for three days. It gets more and more successful every year.

This year she tell's me we are going to do a larger project I can't wait to see it.

If anyone would like to order anything we can be reached thru this blog. Just type in you're e-mail address and I'll contact you...........Thanks for looking Rick

old plane

Its rained here all day in beautiful southern Oregon. I know thats why it's beautiful . but it's kinda hard to do anything out side when its wet all the time. So I stayed in my shop and cleaned and contrary to my other blogs I actually cleaned I even threw out a bunch of scrap lumber that I have been saving for God knows what. It's still not as clean as it needs to be but it's better than it was. I did find something that I had forgotten about It's an old hand held plane Made by Mall Tool Co. in Chicago Ill. I don't know much about it other than the company was bought out in 1958 and production was stop I don't know what year mine was made but it still works

need more wood

As of today I'm approx 80 to 90% done on the deck part and then wouldn't you know it,I ran outta wood.I need more wood. If we had just left it only 20x25 ft.We wouldm't need any wood BUT NOOOOOOO we had to boost it up to 23x30 no big deal I'm only going to need about 10- 12' 2x6 cedar and then this bad boy will be finished . Except for railing and steps and............... and too make matters worse now its raining and I can't do anything

I have another hobby besides wood working Me and my family enjoy tooling around in this 1929 Model A roadster built by Ford . Its completely stock except for the seat covers we did those in vinyl because it holds up better in the weather. My Dad purchased the car when I was about 2 months old and it has been in our family ever since [I'm 58 since you ask] He and I restored it in 1969 we took it clear down and built it from the ground up It's been painted a couple of times since then and it needs it again but I can't afford it right now If any of you are in or around the Roseburg area in July we always take it out for Graffitti nights come see me

Display case

I built this several years ago when I still lived in Las Vegas all my work back then was done outside in the wheather .The top case has glass on 3 sides .
And two adjustable shelves . The bottom case has 1 adjustable shelf and is for storage . the top and bottom are seperate units to aid in moving. This entire case was built from recycled pine that came from crates that industial radiator cores were shipped in. I plan to build another 1 in the future only with hard wood. thanks for looking.

deck construction

Well the past week or so I have been building a deck in my back yard.I really didn't want the job but with our current financial woa's there was no getting around it.The deck started out at its conception at 20'x25' no frills no whitsles or bells, but after construction began the hole thing morfed into a approx. 30'X23' . I still have a long way to go and my body is telling to stop already. I'll post pictures and keep you updated as I progress threw this adventure in pain .
